Work Completed at Utile, Inc.

The Possible Zone (TPZ) was a 36,000 SF gut renovation in the Jackson Square Neighborhood of Boston. A programming and feasibility study preceded the full renovation project. Focused on developing entrepreneurial skills, TPZ provides work-based after school programs for Boston high school students.

The existing building was a combination of an 1890s industrial space originally built as a brewery and a 3-story addition from the 1990s. The renovation of both the base building and the addition provided teaching studios with dedicated makerlabs, a large, state-of-the-art fabrication lab, and staff and community workspaces. The design tackled the non-profit’s complex program by breaking down the barriers between the two sides of the building and uncovering the material logics within the existing structure. The project included a full redesign of the building systems, new rooftop equipment, envelope upgrades, a security redesign, and accessibility upgrades.
