Work Completed at Utile, Inc.
As the single new construction piece of a larger Vision Plan completed by Utile for Belmont Day School, The Barn houses 5 STEAM classrooms, teacher and support spaces, breakout spaces, and a large multipurpose athletics space containing 2 full high school-size basketball courts. The design marries two structural systems --a pre-engineered metal gym building and a stick-built steel classroom headhouse--through a consistent language of exposed structure, metal cladding, and a playful pattern of fenestration. The headhouse incorporates a standardized structural bay for cost efficiency. This results in 5 equally sized classrooms that can be used in myriad ways over time. Customized millwork, color, and window configurations differentiate the experience of each room, creating distinctive learning environments.
The gym volume makes use of passive cooling and connects to outdoor spaces through the use of large garage doors and operable clerestory windows at the ridge. PV panels on the southeast-facing roof deliver much of the energy for this all-electric building.
